Every successful space shuttle mission ends with a brief period of straight-line motion as it comes to a stop on the runway.
No larger than a typical airliner, the space shuttle orbiter lands at more than 350km/h. Even with a drag parachute for braking, the fast-moving orbiter requires up to 3 km to stop!!!!
