TV review: I Want to Be a Hilton 1

«"I Want To Be a Hilton" supplies further evidence of the decline and fall of Western Civilization, or at least the fact that the networks continue to be fully committed to the idea of cloning every permutation of a reality concept and calling it original. Here, we get yet another veiled knockoff of "The Apprentice" as 14 primitive rubes are given crash courses in sophistication by empire matriarch Kathy Hilton.

The flaws in this concept, which comes to us from Endemol USA ("Fear Factor," "Big Brother"), are painfully obvious from the get-go. While you can get away with having Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie cut down to size by forcing them to live like peasants, the reverse isn't true. That's why CBS got in such trouble for even developing the stillborn concept of a real-life "Beverly Hillbillies." You poke fun at the unrefined and the redneck at your peril. It simply isn't funny to lob potshots at the unarmed, rather like shooting the proverbial fish in the barrel and trying to set it to a laugh track. What we get here is simply condescending and mean-spirited. Good luck trying to get that to play in Peoria.»
